To Tent or RV; That is The Question

When I was younger tent camping was a thrill; now it’s a pain in the butt. I love RV’s. It’s almost like a hotel room on wheels. Some people say it’s just not camping, I beg to differ. There’s no cable, no swimming pool (unless you are at a campground, which really isn’t camping), no vending machines, no ice machine… get the point?

How Close is Too Close To Nature?

Communing with nature is pretty much what tent camping is all about. The birds, the crickets, the stars. The bugs. The lack of toilet facilities. I’m all about hunting and fishing and enjoying the great out of doors, right up until I have to lean my back up against some buggy old tree and do my business in a hole I dug in the ground. I’m 54 years old; I may never get out of that position. It is nice feeling that close to God’s country, but I’ve got to tell you; I think I can feel just as close from an RV.

Is It Comfort, Or Culture?

RV’s have a sort of an air about them that says “we are civilized, quiet, mature adults (possibly with well behaved children) who aren’t into a lot of noise, swearing or drunken brawling”. Hmm. “That’s for you tent people who, by the way, set up way over there in that woody area”. I’m not kidding. I read a camping story where the father of the family said pretty much the same. I don’t know; maybe noisy, swearing, drunken people can’t afford the Hilton Hotel on wheels. Maybe it’s just a stigma. I know that for myself, at my age; tents are just no longer conducive to comfort and a sound sleep (and an empty bladder). Sorry tenters.

Don’t Lose Yourself in Being a Mom

Being a mother is hard, no question about it. There are new challenges everyday, and no matter what you’ve learned, children change as they grow and you are continually learning how to care for them. Prioritize – make sure the things that need to get done get done, but don’t sweat the small stuff. Spending your entire day worrying about the kids or whether you’ve ironed today just makes you unhappy and doesn’t make you any more productive.

How do I Keep it a Priority?

It’s very important to communicate your needs with those around you. Oftentimes people don’t realize that those that they love are struggling, and it can be difficult to explain that you’re losing your sense of self. Ignore the self-doubt, and make sure you’re communicating your needs clearly. If you need time for yourself, make sure people know that. If you need a day off, if you’re burnt out, others can help you get through it. Keeping your sense of self through motherhood can be a real challenge, but if you make it a priority, you can get through it.
